What is a communications interface?
Unique to PR electronics, our communication interfaces allow greater access to your process variables. The detachable operator interfaces allow for easy configuration, better diagnostics and improved process visibility. Whether local to the device or remotely via Bluetooth or Modbus, the communication interfaces get you closer to your process.

How does the Bluetooth Communication Enabler (PR 4512) work, and what is its wireless range?
The PR 4512 uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) 4.2/4.1/4.0 to provide wireless communication with iOS and Android devices running the PR electronics PPS app. It has a wireless range of up to 100 meters (328 ft) in open space. The 4512 allows technicians to monitor process values, configure device parameters, and perform diagnostics from a safe distance — particularly useful in hazardous areas where it is approved for Zone 2/Division 2 mounting. It draws its power from the host device, requiring no external battery or supply.
Can the PR 4500 displays be used in hazardous areas?
Yes. The PR 4510, 4511, and 4512 are approved for Zone 2/Division 2 installation per ATEX (II 3 G Ex ec IIC T5), IECEx, FM/UL (Class I, Div 2, Groups A-D), and UKEX standards. This means they can be mounted on signal conditioning devices located in areas with an infrequent or short-duration presence of explosive gas atmospheres. When paired with 9000-series I.S. barriers in the safe area, they enable local monitoring without additional explosion protection measures on the display itself.
How does the PR 4511 Modbus interface enable integration with DCS and SCADA systems?
The PR 4511 converts the internal device data (process value, configuration parameters, diagnostic status) of any compatible PR 4000 or 9000 series device into Modbus RTU registers accessible over RS-485. A DCS or SCADA system can poll these registers to read live process values, alarm states, and device health — in addition to the standard 4-20 mA analog output. This provides a secondary digital data path for enhanced diagnostics and predictive maintenance without replacing the existing analog infrastructure.
What is the display rotation feature on PR 4500 communication interfaces?
All PR 4500 series displays support 180-degree display rotation. This allows the display to be mounted upside-down relative to the host device and still be read correctly. This is particularly useful in installations where signal conditioning devices are mounted with their terminal blocks facing upward (inverted orientation), which is common when cable routing requires top entry. The rotation is configured through the display's on-screen menu.
How many PR 4511 Modbus devices can be connected on a single RS-485 network?
Up to 32 PR 4511 units can be connected on a single RS-485 multidrop line without requiring a repeater, per the RS-485 standard. Each device is assigned a unique Modbus address (1-247). For larger installations exceeding 32 devices, RS-485 repeaters can be used to extend the network. PR electronics offers dedicated Modbus cables (PR 8510 for 8-unit connection, PR 8511 Y-splitter) and RJ45 accessories (PR 8513-8517) to simplify wiring.
What isolation protection does the PR 4511 provide between the fieldbus and the host device?
The PR 4511 provides 2.5 kVAC test isolation (250 VAC reinforced working voltage) between the RS-485 communication bus and the host signal conditioning device. This ensures that faults, surges, or ground potential differences on the Modbus network cannot affect the host device's measurement integrity or damage its electronics. The isolation also prevents ground loops when multiple devices on the RS-485 bus are connected to different power references.
What response time and update rate does the PR 4511 achieve for Modbus communication?
The PR 4511 has an internal response time of less than 20 ms and an update rate exceeding 50 Hz. This means that process value changes are reflected in the Modbus registers within 20 ms of the host device updating its output. The actual polling rate achieved depends on the baud rate setting, the number of devices on the bus, and the Modbus master's polling cycle. At 115,200 bps with a single device, very high throughput can be achieved for applications requiring near-real-time digital data.
