Isomerization unit
Flow measurement

The isomerization unit converts linear molecules to higher-octane branched molecules for blending into gasoline or feed to alkylation units.
To ensure proper conditions inside the isomerization unit reactor, gas chromatographs are used to measure the product effluent leaving the conversion reactor. The active 4...20 mA signals from the sensors need to be connected to an active/sourcing PLC card in the safe area. The PR 9113B temperature / mA converter is the right fit for this task and by attaching the PR 4510 display / programming front to the 9113B, diagnostic capability is added to the application.

What is an isom unit in a refinery and why is flow measurement important?
An isomerization (isom) unit converts low-octane straight-chain paraffins (n-pentane, n-hexane) into their higher-octane branched isomers (isopentane, isohexane) to improve gasoline quality. Accurate flow measurement of the feed stream, hydrogen makeup gas, and product streams is essential for maintaining the correct hydrogen-to-hydrocarbon ratio and optimizing catalyst performance. PR Electronics signal conditioners ensure these flow transmitter signals are accurately and safely transmitted from the hazardous process area to the DCS.
